How to Install a DIY Pendant Light WITHOUT Hardwiring Anything!

August 2, 2018 By Lidia 10 Comments

There are rooms in my home where no electrical was placed in the ceiling.  So floor lamps, table lamps, even string lights make up my lack of light in that space.  But then I had a recent “a-ha!” moment when it came to pendant light fixtures. I could DIY one myself WITHOUT installing any electrical anything! (GASP!)

This is the table top lamp fixture I found at, you guessed it, the dollar store!  But you can find similar ones here and here which would work just as well for this project!

The key to this whole project is that this table lamp is battery operated!!!  No electrical installations required!  At $4 per table lamp, I thought I’d give my idea a try!

Materials

Here are the materials you need for this project:

  • A battery operated table-top lamp fixture
  • 1-2 ft of chandelier chain (or rope)
  • A piece of wood or pre-made molding (Mine is from Michaels)
  • 2 Elephant Hooks
  • 3M Command Strips
  • Craft Paint and Craft Brushes
  • Gorilla Glue

Step 1

Paint!  Paint your piece of wood that will act as your light fixture base plate, and paint anything else where you want to add a bit of color.  In my case I also painted the 2 hooks I’m using in the same colour as the wood round.

Step 2

Dab a good amount of Gorilla Glue on your hook and place it on your newly painted base plate.  Side note, Gorilla Glue has turned into my new favourite product.  This stuff sticks and it HOLDS!!!  And this version of it dries clear so you don’t see any glue or adhesion marks.  SOLD!!!

Step 3

Repeat Step 2 but apply your second hook to your light fixture. But make sure you can still access the battery panel!

Step 4

Take your chandelier chain or rope and attach each end to your hooks.

Step 5

Take 3M Command Strips (I love you 3M!) and attach those to your light fixture base plate.

Step 6

Mount your lighting fixture!

What I love about this project is that it is inexpensive, it’s completely removable, and it adds additional decorative light where you’d otherwise need to add in expensive electrical.

Plus it’s cute!!  (Which is super important in home decor, right?!) 😉

This is so cool! I bet it would look perfect in my reading corner. Thanks for sharing this idea. Hopefully I’ll find something similarly close to that in the dollar store near us 🙂

I have a great chandelier I would love to convert since I live in a rental and my living room is a cave, lol. I have high ceilings, no attic space above but I do have beams. Not sure if they are primarily decorative and will truly support the weight. Any suggestions on how to confirm this? Would hate to find out the hard way…!!

I love high ceilings and beams add such character!! I wonder if (after confirming there is no electrical or wiring in the beams) you could drill a small pilot hole in a discreet location to see if they are decorative versus actual wood?? There are special meters that can detect the content in walls and surfaces that may help as well although I’m not sure how reliable they are. Let me know how it turns out!!
